Raum Architects
We create space
Raum is a South African architecture practice founded on a simple conviction: that great architecture begins with understanding - understanding the site, the people, and the purpose - long before a line is drawn.
Our Philosophy
We create space - not just buildings.
The word Raum means space. Not in the abstract sense - but in the lived, felt, inhabited sense. The space between walls. The space between people. The space that changes how you think, how you rest, how you create.
Before anything is designed, we work to understand what space means for each client. Their daily rhythms. Their aspirations. The way light enters a room at different times of day. The relationship between inside and outside.
This is why we built this platform - to extend that understanding beyond the studio, to help prospective clients gain clarity before their first meeting with an architect.
Direction
Raum Architects is led by a SACAP-registered principal whose practice spans residential, renovation, and select commercial work across South Africa.
Design Principles
What Guides Our Work
Context First
Every project starts with the site — its orientation, its climate, its neighbourhood. Architecture that ignores context creates buildings, not spaces.
Material Honesty
We believe materials should be what they are. Concrete, timber, stone, glass — each chosen for purpose, expressed without pretence.
Light as Material
Natural light is the most powerful design element. We shape space around how light moves through a building, across seasons and hours.
Restraint Over Excess
Good architecture is as much about what you leave out as what you put in. We pursue clarity, not complexity for its own sake.
The Practice
Architecture for South Africa
Based in Gauteng, Raum Architects works across South Africa - from the Atlantic coastline of Cape Town to the bushveld of Limpopo, from the Winelands to the subtropical coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Our work spans residential homes, renovations, and select commercial projects. We are registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), and our practice is built on a commitment to design excellence, professional integrity, and genuine collaboration with every client.
